We are staying at the Drury Inn and Suites in Valdosta, Georgia this evening. And it is safe to say that it will be a very quiet evening despite New Year’s Eve.
Everyone here is a snowbird on their way to Florida. I suspect that most will not make it to midnight tonight. I do not think I have ever seen so many older couples in a hotel at one time before.
For fun, I have been asking people that I run into, either in the elevator or in the hallways, if they are on their way to Florida. To a person they laugh and say: yes… aren’t we all going there?
For those of us fortunate enough to escape the harsh winter weather, the trip south is a welcome adventure. Even here in Valdosta it is wonderful to have spring like temperatures and sunshine. Lorraine and I have missed the sun in Ontario. We left there after about 10 days of fog and cloud. Days are short and dreary. And cold.
I had almost forgotten what the sun looks like.
On day 2 of our drive, which was yesterday, we had the amazing opportunity to connect with some dear friends from our time at Myakka River Motorcoach Resort in Port Charlotte. I’m not sure what the odds were that we would happen to be heading down the I-75 at roughly the same time — they started from Michigan, we started from the Greater Toronto Area in Ontario — but through the magic of social media and texting we were able to meet at a Buc-ee’s in Tennessee.
They arrived safely to their winter home in Florida today. We will arrive to our winter home sometime tomorrow. And we will have time to reconnect with them over the following months. They are such a terrific couple and I have so missed them.
And, yes, I completely forgot that for those of you that subscribe to my posts via email you would not see the featured image that sits atop the posts on the website. For whatever reason, those get dropped in the emails. I heard from a few of you that you were curious about the house we have for the winter so I’ve included a few shots here.
It is a stunning home and we are thankful to have the opportunity to enjoy the house and the community at Riverwood for the winter.
I asked Lorraine what she was most looking forward to in Florida this year. Her answer? Family, friends, our church in Florida, and being in a place where there is sunshine and warmth. The same for myself.
As we have gotten older, we no longer take for granted many of the adventures we have been blessed to enjoy over the years.
I missed this part of our life dearly during the pandemic years and I am thrilled that we are finally going to be back this year.
